Sun Safety for Children

As the summer season approaches, it's important to prioritise sun safety for our children. While outdoor play and activities are essential for their development, protecting their delicate skin from harmful UV rays is crucial. In this blog, we'll share valuable tips and advice to ensure your little ones can enjoy the sun while staying safe.

  1. Apply and reapply sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it generously to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, arms, and legs. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if they've been swimming or sweating.

  2. Seek shade during peak hours: The sun's rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Encourage your children to play in shaded areas such as under trees, umbrellas, or canopies. This reduces their exposure to direct sunlight.

  3. Dress them in protective clothing: Cover your child's skin with lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that offers UV protection. Opt for wide-brimmed hats to shield their face, neck, and ears. Don't forget to protect their eyes with sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection.

  4. Hydrate regularly: Keep your children well-hydrated by offering them water frequently, especially during outdoor activities. Dehydration can occur quickly in the heat, so ensure they drink enough fluids.

  5. Teach sun-smart habits: Educate your children about the importance of sun safety. Teach them to seek shade, wear sunscreen, and wear protective clothing. Encourage them to play in shaded areas and use outdoor toys that provide shade, such as play tents or sun umbrellas.

  6. Be a role model: Set a good example by practicing sun safety yourself. Children learn by observing their parents and caregivers, so make sure you prioritise your own sun protection.

By following these sun safety tips, you can ensure that your children enjoy the outdoors while minimising the risk of sunburn and long-term damage from UV exposure. With proper protection, they can soak up the joys of summer while staying safe and healthy. Remember, sun safety is an ongoing practice, so make it a priority all year round!
