Starting at Red Brick Day Nursery

Starting nursery is a big change for both you and your child. To facilitate this, we offer complimentary settling in sessions to allow your child to feel comfortable and happy at nursery before starting.

Settling in sessions enables us to assess the needs of your child and help them to settle into their new surroundings as quickly and smoothly as possible. Every child is individual and therefore the time it takes to settle them varies, and we work in partnership with you to accommodate this.

To make the transition as smooth as possible, there are things that you can do at home to ease the settling in, such as:

The more information you give the staff, the better time your child will have. Tell the team all about their likes, dislikes, what foods they eat, when they nap, anything that frightens them and what their favourite toys are. We ask you to complete an “All About Me” form when your child starts nursery which helps us learn all about your child

"If your child has a particular favourite toy or “blankie” she wants to take with her to help her settle in, it doesn't hurt at first," says Purnima Tanuku, Chief Executive of the National Day Nurseries Association.

You may choose to bring a few items like a special cup, some special toys and things that remind your child of home – we can help you to make a memory box where the ‘settling items’ can be such as a loved toy, photos of the family etc.

Talk about nursery in positive terms, as something exciting and enjoyable, and a time to make new friends and play with new and different toys. Don't belittle or ignore any fears your child may have – listen to them and talk about their fears and what to expect at nursery

There are a host of books about this new stage in your child’s life. Try “My First Day At Nursery School” by Becky Edwards.

No matter how torn up you're feeling about leaving your child and them taking their first fledgling steps outside the nest, you mustn't show it to them. If they see you crying or fretting, you'll make them more uneasy about the whole nursery experience.

When it's time for you to say goodbye, explain carefully that you're about to go and you'll be back to pick them up when nursery is over. Don't start to leave and then get drawn back by tears and a trembling lip. We have 13 cameras inside and out and if you are worried we can show you what’s happening without more upset
